Violin & Viola Instructor
Dr. Jeffrey Komar is excited to be teaching violin and viola with Maple and Spruce Music Academy! Jeff is an active chamber and orchestral musician and has played with ensembles across Ontario, including (but not limited to) the London Symphonia, the International Symphony Orchestra, Arcady Ensemble, Kammerchor London, and Magisterra Soloists.
Jeff holds several post-secondary degrees in music. He received his Bachelor of Music from Dalhousie University’s Fountain School of the Performing Arts in 2015, where he studied under violinist and noted pedagogue Philippe Djokic. He received his Master’s of Music from Western University in 2017, where he studied under violists Sharon Wei and Dr. Caitlyn Boyle. This spring, he completed his Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) degree in viola performance, also at Western University. His doctoral research, for which he received a prestigious SSHRC Doctoral Award in 2021, examined collaborations between non-Indigenous musicians and members of the Siksikaitsitapi (Blackfoot) First Nations communities in southwestern Alberta.
As well as being an accomplished performer, Jeff is a dedicated music educator. He a faculty member with several local music education initiatives, among them Forest City String School and El Sistema Aeolian. He also taught viola studio and chamber music as an adjunct faculty member with Western University’s Department of Music Performance Studies in 2022/23.
When he is not playing his viola, Jeff enjoys drinking coffee, cooking, and playing video games with his wife and fellow music-lover, soprano Lauren Bryant-Monk. They live happily together with their two cats, Rita and Pearl.
